Complicated Loss
When grief does not fit the usual expectations, it does not mean you are grieving incorrectly. It may simply mean the weight you are carrying is deeper and more complex.
Welcome. If you are here, you may be facing a loss that feels isolating, unclear, or ongoing. This could include a stigmatized death such as suicide or overdose, the end of an important relationship, pregnancy loss, or quieter forms of grief like dementia-related loss or the death of a beloved pet.
Complicated grief can feel like being trapped in an ongoing cycle of pain, where the intensity of the loss remains sharp instead of easing with time. This space exists for people carrying that kind of grief.
Unlike typical bereavement, complicated grief involves persistent and overwhelming longing, emotional pain, or preoccupation with the person or loss, often continuing for many months and interfering with daily life.
Signs You May Be Experiencing Complex Grief -
- Emotional Numbness - Feeling disconnected, detached, or unable to fully accept the loss.
- Intrusive Thoughts - Struggling to focus on anything beyond the death or the circumstances around it.
- Anger or Bitterness - Feeling resentful, hopeless, or unable to trust others or find meaning in life.
- Feeling Stuck - Sensing that the grief has become heavier or more consuming over time rather than gradually softening.
You do not have to have it all figured out.
You are allowed to take this one step at a time.
